Jorge Martin will don the number one on his Aprilia MotoGP bike 2025. The world champion confirmed his choice at the team’s launch event on Thursday morning.
After winning the title, Martin faced a dilemma. He could either switch to no. 1, as the champion is entitled to do, or retain #89.
The Spaniard used #89 en route to his first premier-class crown. And he’s displayed it on the front of his bike since his MotoGP debut in 2021.

Joan Mir and Fabio Quartaro retained their numbers after winning the championship in 2020 and 2021 respectively. But Francesco Bagnaia went the other way, becoming the first to claim the #1 since Casey Stoner in 2012.
Martin ultimately decided to imitate his 2024 title rival. He may have to revert back to 89 if, as anticipated, he relinquishes his seat on MotoGP’s throne.
Martin doesn’t expect to win the title this year after leaving the Ducati stable to join Aprilia. He’s ready to wait until 2026, or perhaps the 2027 regulation changes.
MotoGP fans absolutely love Jorge Martin’s #1 decision for 2025
Martin’s choice proved popular among fans on social media. Aprilia posted a video of the Spaniard and his new teammate Marco Bezzecchi pulling the covers off of their new bike.
On Instagram, one said the no. 1 looked ‘amazing’ on the RSGP25. Another could barely contain their joy, writing ‘hell yes!’.
A fellow supporter added ‘we love to see it’, and one simply said ‘finally’. There was also a sense of ‘pride’ given that carrying the #1 is a great honour.
The livery changes from last year’s bike are subtle, with the red now more prominent and the blue less visible. But one fan said the ‘beauty’ of the design had been taken to the ‘next level’ by the #1 plate.
Is Jorge Martin about to bring one Valentino Rossi trait to Aprilia?
Aleix Espargaro believes Martin can win the 2025 title, despite the reigning champion’s reservations. Espargaro is clearly an authority on the matter, having just left Aprilia for a test role at Honda.
Perhaps his best hope is a close battle among the new Ducati teammates Bagnaia and Marc Marquez. If they take enough points off one another, it could keep Martin in the frame.
One ex-Yamaha crew chief believes Martin could have a Valentino Rossi effect on Aprilia. He recalled that the Japanese manufacturer had a good bike in the early 2000s, but they needed a champion like Rossi to turn it into a truly great one.
